What is a catalyst?
- accelerates, causes, or initiates a reaction without itself being affected
- precipitates an event or change
- modifies and increases the rate of a reaction between two things without itself being consumed in the process
Examples of catalysts
- enzymes catalyze digestion
- publications and media catalyze thought, ideas, and awareness
- significant events catalyze people and institutions (war, death, birth, decisions)
- leaders and innovative tools catalyze culture (Martin Luther King Jr, Michael Jackson, Bill W. (AA), the printing press and the Internet, teachers and spiritual leaders)
Relational catalysts
- develops an idea, shares it with others, leads by example, and steps back
- the visionary, the bridge, the connector, the networker
- inspires and connects people

Ways that you can be a catalyst:
1. Host a connection event
Plan a party or social mixer that brings people together. Be intentional about facilitating introductions between people.
2.
Participate or Organize a volunteer activity
Identify something that you and your friends care about (or want to learn more about) and participate in volunteering for the cause.
Identify a neighbor that may need some kind of assistance and ask your other neighbors to help out. Prepare meals, mow lawn, paint house, sweep driveway, or drive to grocery store or pharmacy.
3. Join or form an action team
Have an idea and a passion? Join an action team of others with the same interests or form your own action team to make it happen. Catalyst can help you!
4. Start a new community
Is there a group of people and organizations that you'd like to see collaborate more effectively? Work with Catalyst to start a new community and we'll help you be the catalyst for making that happen! |
